Product Description
With all the talk about “democracy” these days, it’s surprising how little time is spent concentrating on the concept of democracy itself, its history and justification as a form of political governance. Democracy For Beginners looks at democracy’s rich evolution in its varied forms, and at some of the challenges democracies face today.

Beginning with the rise of democracy in fifth-century Athens and ending with an exploration of what the future might hold – for example the notion of “e-democracy”– Democracy For Beginners is an important resource for understanding the foundation on which our country stands. Readers will become familiar with ideas advanced by democracy’s advocates and architects, and by its critics, from Plato to contemporary social choice theoreticians.

Democracy For Beginners is the perfect introduction to the United States of America's founding principles.

Cavalier's analysis of the evolution of the Democratic process is both engaging and insightful. By the end of this book not only did I feel more enlightened in regard to the foundations of the American democratic process, but also inspired to engage more actively within my own community. In the wake of the recent Obama campaign that invigorated community members from all walks of life, this book reiterates that charge for us all to become active citizens.

Democracy for Beginners is the kind of book that will appeal to a wide audience, grounded as it is in solid scholarship expressed in accessible language and applied to current situations. The historical section highlights the essence of each person or concept, and some complex quotes from the literature are interpreted with examples from current times. Connections from one person or era to another further support the clarity of the text and promote understanding. The substantial but not overwhelming historical section transitions to a section on concepts and procedures, which seems to form the heart of the book and to address the question of what democracy means to the individual. Notable in this section is the assertion that democracy is not "the one, true answer," but rather a set of procedures to help people "muddle through." This section then segues to a discussion of deliberative democracy, with many suggestions for action. The point is clearly made that development of a constitution is not enough; it's the engagement of the people in the democratic process that is critical. All in all, an excellent reference and guide to democracy and the democratic process.
